Andrea Barnes is a co-founder of Project uPGrade, a young women’s empowerment organization designed to inspire high school girls in Prince George’s County to achieve their professional, academic, and personal goals. Andrea is also a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing her bachelor’s in public policy with minors in Hispanic studies and education.

A first-generation college student from Fort Washington, Maryland, Andrea aims to disable the poverty cycle through community development, improving educational equity, and supporting strong evidence-based public policy. She was recently inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the Order of the Golden Fleece, and recognized as 2018’s Harvey E. Beech Outstanding Senior at her university. Andrea directed the Latinx Mentoring Program for the Carolina Latinx Collaborative, interned with Prince George’s County Public Schools and the Public School Forum of North Carolina, and served as a Communications and Policy Intern for a North Carolina congressional representative. In the future, Andrea hopes to improve quality of life outcomes for underserved, minority, and low-income communities by serving in public office.
