Arun Puracken, a proud lifelong student and graduate of Prince George’s County Public Schools, is a third-year social studies teacher and Department Chair at Accokeek Academy in Accokeek, MD. He is a firm believer in civic engagement and engaging students in instruction, which incorporates real world and historical events.
Mr. Puracken graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) with a BA in Political Science. While at UMBC, he worked for the Classic Upward Bound program, providing college readiness tutoring and counseling services to Baltimore area high school students. After leaving UMBC, Mr. Puracken completed an Americorp year in Baltimore providing job training and community-based monitoring to adjudicated youth.. Locally, Mr. Puracken has served as the Director for the nonprofit Global Developmental Services for Youth Development located in Seat Pleasant, MD, providing area children development of mental, physical, and social skills through the building of leadership and entrepreneurship.
At Accokeek Academy, Mr. Puracken coaches elementary boys basketball and sponsors the Student Government Association. Under his leadership, the Social Studies Department has sent nine projects to state National History Day competition over the last two years. Lastly, Mr. Puracken has been very active in local school board politics teaching his students about the importance of civic engagement in our community.
