Angella Foster is a performer, choreographer, and dance educator with more than twenty years of experience, on-stage and inside the classroom. She is the founding artistic director and resident choreographer of alight dance theater, a professional dance company based in Greenbelt since 2010. Foster is passionate about bringing artists, audiences, students, and professionals together, to celebrate the power of story and experience the joy of the creative process.
Foster holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in dance performance/choreography and creative writing from Hope College. She trained at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio in New York City before relocating to Houston, Texas, to perform with Ad Deum Dance Company. She settled in Greenbelt while pursuing her master of fine arts degree in dance choreography at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2010, she was awarded the Local Dance Commissioning Project Award from the Kennedy Center for alight dance theater’s debut project titled “Speechless.”
Under Foster’s direction, alight has been presented at Dance Place, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Intersections Arts Festival at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, the Greenbelt Museum, Greenbelt Arts Center, the Source Festival, and the Velocity DC Festival. She has served on the faculties of Towson University and the University of Maryland, College Park, and taught at private dance studios in Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Texas, and Maryland. Foster is the director of the Studio Dance Program and Creative Kids Camp manager at the Greenbelt Community Center.
