Councilman Mel Franklin (D) was elected to his first four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in the November 2, 2010 General Election. Councilman Franklin represents the 9th Councilmanic District of Prince George’s County, which includes the southern third of the county’s land mass and most of the county’s rural tier.
Councilman Franklin serves as Chair of the Council Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee (PZED). Councilman Franklin served as a Maryland Assistant Attorney General from 2008-2010; a member of the Board of Trustees of the Prince George’s Community College from 2008-2010; and an attorney for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission from 2001-2005. Councilman Franklin was also employed as a regulatory attorney at the law firm of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal (now SNR Denton) from 2006-08.
Councilman Franklin is married to Monekia Franklin and they share two beautiful children, Jamel Jr. at age 5 and Alexis at age 1. Councilman Franklin is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; founder of the Greater Marlboro Democratic Club (founded in 2005); a Past Board Member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Prince George’s County Chapter; a Member of the NAACP, Prince George’s County Chapter; a Past Executive Board Member of the Young Democrats of Maryland; and was awarded the Young Democrat of the Year honor in 2006 by the Prince George’s County Young Democrats. Councilman Franklin graduated from Duke University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 2001. He was also admitted to the Maryland Bar that same year. He also earned a B.A. degree in political science in 1998 from the University of South Carolina.
